The October Checklist: Getting a Texas Chimney Ready for Burn Season

Every December, the first real cold front fills every chimney company's calendar in 48 hours. The homeowners who did the October checklist are drinking cocoa; everyone else is on a three-week waitlist with a fireplace they're afraid to light.

Check the creosote before the season, not during

A flashlight up past the damper: buildup over 1/8 inch means sweep before the first fire. Booking in October means choosing your slot; booking in December means taking what's left.

Crown and cap — the freeze-thaw deadline

Texas winters are mild but they freeze-thaw cycle constantly, and that's worse for masonry than steady cold. Every crack in the crown gets pried wider all winter. An October crown-coat is the cheapest insurance in this entire checklist.

Work the damper before you need it

Open and close it a few times. A damper that grinds in October seizes in January — and a stuck-open damper pours your heating budget up the flue all season. Freeing and lubricating one is a quick service-call item.

The first fire, done right

Burn seasoned wood (split a year ago, moisture under 20%), start with a small hot fire rather than a packed smolder, and crack a window for the first burn if the house is very tight. Smoke rolling into the room on day one is a draft problem worth diagnosing, not living with.

Detectors are part of the fireplace

Fresh batteries in smoke AND carbon monoxide detectors, one CO unit on every sleeping floor. A chimney moves combustion products through your house's envelope all winter; the detectors are the system's last line, and they're ten dollars.
