Fireplace Panel & Firebox Repair

The firebox takes more heat than any other part of the system, and its walls — refractory panels in prefab units, firebrick in masonry fireplaces — are designed to be sacrificial. Cracked is normal eventually; ignored is how heat finds the framing behind.

Prefab panels: the 1/4-inch rule

Hairline surface cracks in refractory panels are cosmetic. Cracks you can fit a nickel into (about 1/16”), crumbling faces, or gaps at panel joints mean replacement — manufacturers and code agree on roughly the same line. We measure, photograph, and tell you which side yours is on. Replacement panels are matched to your unit’s make and model.

Masonry fireboxes: rebuilt joint by joint

Firebrick survives almost forever; the refractory mortar between bricks doesn’t. We rake failed joints and repack with true refractory mortar — regular mortar pops out within a season at firebox temperatures. Loose or spalled firebrick gets reset or replaced individually.

Common Questions

Can I use the fireplace with a cracked panel?

Hairline cracks: yes. Gaps that fit a coin edge, exposed metal, or crumbling faces: no — that’s the heat shield failing. A photo to our office gets you a same-day answer.

Why did my panel crack in only a few years?

Usually thermal shock — big roaring fires in a cold firebox, or burning material hotter than the unit’s rating. We’ll mention the burn habits that stretch panel life when we install yours.
