Smoke Chamber Cleaning

Between your damper and your flue sits the smoke chamber — a funnel that turns fire into draft. It collects the heaviest soot in the entire system, and because you can’t see it, it almost never gets cleaned. That’s a problem worth fixing.

The dirtiest spot in the system

The chamber’s sloped walls catch rising smoke first, before the flue. Soot and creosote cake onto the corbelled brick steps, narrowing the throat and slowing your draft — which sends smoke into the room and builds even more deposit. We clean it back to bare masonry and check the walls while we’re in there.

Why it pairs with parging

Many older DFW chambers were built with stepped, unparged brick — rough shelves that hold soot forever. If yours needs it, we’ll show you photos and quote a smoke chamber parge (smoothing the walls) that improves draft permanently and removes the ledges the soot clings to.

Common Questions

How do I know my smoke chamber is dirty?

Smoke rolling into the room on lighting, a strong fireplace smell in summer, or visible black buildup just above the open damper. Most chambers that have never been specifically cleaned need it.

Is this included in a regular sweep?

A sweep covers the chamber surface as the brushes pass. A dedicated chamber cleaning is the deeper service for chambers with years of caked deposit — we’ll tell you if a sweep alone gets yours clean.
